On September 4, the Rainforest Foundation contacted the cryptocurrency and blockchain community to ask them for assistance to combat deforestation and wildfires in Brazil.

Their post on the platform’s website states:

The Rainforest Foundation says it is accepting donations of cryptocurrencies in Bitcoin(BTC), Ether(ETH), Litecoin(LTC), Bitcoin Cash(BCH) and other cryptocurrencies.

Use blockchain to ensure transparency

The organization will allow donors to track the work done by the platform in the Amazon rainforest and reward local communities protecting their forests with cryptocurrency.

The organization is also studying the use of smart contracts to prevent illegal exploitation, land trade and protect forests from gold mining.

Suzanne Pelletier, executive director at the Rainforest Foundation, says the dire situation in the Brazilian rainforest has prompted them to come up with innovative solutions.
